Abstract

Objectives :We investigated the effect of metformin on adiponectin plasma in obesity with prediabetes patients, in connection with fasting plasma glucose, 2 –h post prandial,,lipid profile, BMI and waist circumference. Methods: a clinical trial with 40 obesity-prediabetes, 30 received metformin 500 mg twice daily and other received placebo as control. Adiponectin level, fasting plasma glucose, 2-h post prandial, lipid profile, BMI and waist circumference was measured at beginning and after 12 weeks. Statistic analysis by using software SPPSS 12 for windows. Results : adiponectin level significantly increased (3.56 ± 1.35 to 4.90 ±2.24 ug/ml, p= 0.002), in line with significant decreased of fasting plasma glucose (102.63±20.3 to 96.57±14.17 mg/dl,p=0.045), 2-h post prandial (167.03±15.79 to 134.70 ±21.54 mg/dl,p=0.042),trigliseride (164.93 ±55.42 to 125.03 ±32.98 mg/dl,p=0.000), no significant decreased LDL-Chol (148.41± 45.32 to 145.53± 40.22 mg/dl,p=0.295 ), increased HDL-Chol (47.20± 9.10 to 56.63 ± 10.56 mg/dl,p=0.000), decreased waist circumference (94.17±17.0 to 92.40±7.39 cm,p=0.005 ) and BMI (29.02± 1.88 to 27.89 ± 2.11 kg/m2,p=0.000). Conclusion: metformin remarkably increased adiponectine level and HDL-Chol significantly, decreased significantly another variable except LDL-Chol and Blood pressure. Keywords : metformin, adiponectine and obesity with prediabetes
