Abstract

The developing nervous system is one of the most conplex examples of mrphogenesis, involving both the fonnation of intricate tlssue atructures and their precise interconnect ions . To acconplish thie, the cells nust nigrate to the ploper place where they aggregate, differentiate and fo rn etable connections. Path flnding, active nigration and fornation of stable adhes ions during the fornation of tlssue patterns and fornation of synapses in the 'nervous systen are major aspects of its norphogenesis. In these processes cell surface molecules play an inportant ro1e. These processes depend not only upon ce1l- celI adhes ion rclecules (CAl.{s), but also upon ce1l-substrate adhesion mlecules (SAIC).
