Abstract

Any business that exerts great and important effects on environment must administer an environmental impacts analysis. The analysis objective is to prevent any development programmes from destroying or degrading the quality of environment. A palm oil factory is a business that must administer an environmental impacts analysis. To prevent environmental destruction, the factory processes its liquid waste in a liquid waste processing installation. The study was aimed at analysing the effectiveness of liquid waste management in a palm oil factory. Variables that were measured during the study are as follows: 1. The quality of liquid waste before the inlet and after the outlet of the processing installation with the following parameters: a) TSS (Total Suspended Solid) ; b) pH (potensial Hydrogen) ; c) BOD (Biochemical Oxygen Demand) ; d) COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand); e) Fat and oil; and f) Total N. 2. The quality of river water at the point of 50 metres up from the processing installation outlet and at the point of 50 metres down from the processing installation outlet with the following parameters: a) TSS; b) pH; c) BOD; d) COD; e) Fat and oil; and f) Total N. The study shows that the effectiveness of liquid waste before and after the processing installation is lower than 80% except the total N. There is a deviation or value higher than the environmental quality standard (BML) for TSS, BOD, COD, and Fat and oil parameters. At the point of 50 metres down the processing installation, there is an increase for all parameters. The increase is due to the infiltration of liquid waste from the upper part to the lower part of the processing installation. Kata kunci: pengelolaan, limbah cair, pabrik kelapa sawit
