Abstract

Background: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a unique tumor due to its etiology and endemic distribution. Ethnic and regional factors strongly influence the risk of disease. The histopathological features are different depend on the etiology. This retrospective preliminary study is designed to establish the histopatological features of nasopharyngeal carcinoma according to WHO histological classification in West Sumatera. Methods: All cases of nasopharyngeal carcinoma diagnosed by histopathological examination during period of 2006-2008 were collected from archives of laboratorium Patologi Anatomi FK-Unand, RSUP Dr. M. Djamil Padang and RSU Dr. Achmad Muchtar Bukittinggi. All cases were reevaluated. Results: During 2006-2008 there were 45 cases of nasopharyngeal carcinoma in West Sumatera. Most of patients were male, 32 cases (71,1%). Subtype WHO-2 and WHO-3 were found to be in the same frequency 17 cases, respectively (37,8%). Male were found to be always more predominant in every subtype, respectively; WHO-1 10 cases (90,9%), WHO-2 12 cases (70,6%) and WHO-3 10 cases (58,8%). The most prevalence age group were of 51-60 years, 17 cases (37,8%), with the most subtype was WHO-3, 7 cases (41,2%). Conclusion: This study shows that nasopharyngeal carcinoma of subtype WHO-2 and WHO-3 were found to be the most predominant subtype in West Sumatera. Key words: nasopharyngeal carcinoma, Sumatera Barat, histopathologic subtype WHO-1, WHO-2, WHO-3.
