Abstract

ABSTRACT Translation is an activity of meaning transference of the source language into the target language. A good translation is a translation that could reach the equivalence that can convey messages and information from the source language grammatically and not seen as a result of the translation process. One of the services that use technology is machine translation. Machine translation that are practical, inexpensive, and easily available is Google translate. The aim of this study is to describe the equivalence of English-Indonesian translations of Hansel and Gretel story using Google translate at the level of the lexicon, to describe the equivalence of English-Indonesian translations of Hansel and Gretel story using Google translate at the level of syntactic structure and to describe the equivalence of English-Indonesian translations of Hansel and Gretel story using Google translate at the level of textual. Research is descriptively and qualitatively done. It was used to understand the equivalence of translations Hansel and Gretel using Google translate. Researchers also conducted comparison meaning using a dictionary to find the appropriate lexical meaning. Analysis at the level of the lexicon is done by using the theory of equivalence lexicon by Baker (1992) and Catford (1965). At the syntactic level were analyzed using the theory of phrase structure rules by Chomsky (1965) and Hasan (1998). At the level of textual, it was analized using the theory of textual coherence and cohesion by Halliday (1976) and Nida (1964). The result of this study are (1) equivalence at the level of lexicon; the concept of semantic 97,88%, part of speech 99,02% , the difference in interpersonal perspective 99,02%, the cultural concept 99,35%, loan words 99,43%, the difference of expressive meaning 99,75%, redundancy 99,92%. (2) Equivalence at the level of syntactic structure; translation of idiomatic sentences 82,14%, translation of idiomatic phrases 85,71%, noun phrase translation 92,86%, translation of gerund 92,86%, the use of affixes 97,62%, the determination of active and passive sentences 97,62%, and verb phrases translation 98,81%. (3) Equivalence at the textual level; reference 24,24%, coherence 41,4%, conjunction 65,52%, lexical cohesion 82,76%, repetition 93,11%, and punctuation 93,11%. Overall, machine translations produced by Google translate with English as the source language and Indonesian as the target language of the text is just linguistic transfer than transfer of meaning. It still need improvement by the users so that the level of naturalness and readability of text in the target language can be achieved.
