Abstract
ABSTRACT Research on antibiotic resistance of Escherichia coli (E. coli) and the number of coliform bacteria obtained from Balang fish at Batang Arau River have been done. This study aims to determine the presence of pathogenic E. coli which is resistant to antibiotics and the amount of bacteria in Balang fish. The qualitative assay of Escherichia coli has done by using MPN method (Most Probable Number). Based on this method the number of coliform bacteria and feacal coliform (E.coli) which can be obtained is ≥ 2400 MPN/100 mL. Five cultures from Endo Agar was carried to biochemical assay. The results of biochemical assay is indole test and lactose test are positive, while citrate test is negative. Based on this test the five cultures are positive Escherichia coli. Cultures obtained from the isolation of Escherichia coli were resistance tested by the diffusion method using antibiotic amoxicilin, ampicilin, tetracycline and chrolamphenicol. Largest halozone was shown in amoxicilin. The patterns of antibiotic resistance of Escherichia coli in percent is 30% culture resistant, 45% intermediate and 25% susceptible to all four antibiotics. The results shows no amplification of the stx1 gene which is indicating no bacteria Escherichia coli O157: H7 in these five cultures.
