Abstract

ABSTRACT MENGKUDU LEAVES EXTRACT (Morinda citrifolia L.) AS CORROSION INHIBITOR OF St.37 STEEL IN HYDROCHLORIC ACID MEDIUM BY : ANNISA NURUL FADHILLA (BP : 1010412024) Prof. Dr. Emriadi, MS and Yeni Stiadi, MS Extract of mengkudu leaves (Morinda citrifolia L.) was investigated as a corrosion inhibitor of St.37 steel in hydrochloric acid medium using weight loss measurement and potentiodynamic polarization studies. The result showed that inhibition efficiency was 93,719% by weight loss measurement at optimum extract concentration and 89,873% by potentiodynamic polarization measurement. Inhibition efficiency increase with increase in concentration of the extract and decreases with increase in temperature. The inhibitive effect due to adsorption of the extract on steel surface obeyed the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Potentiodynamic polarization method showed corrosion current decrease with increase in concentration of the extract and increasing efficiency inhibition. FT-IR and surface morphology confirmed there was interaction between steel surface and mengkudu leaves leading to the formation of protective layer on the steel surface. Keywords : Morinda citrifolia L., corrosion inhibition, Langmuir adsorption isotherm, potentiodynamic polarization.
