Abstract

Minangkabaunese is commonly known with the spirit of merantau. This Minangkabaunese is found almost in every part of Indonesia, even abroad. Eventhough they have contacted with various people from various ethnics, they never forget their philosophy of life adat basandi syara’, syara’ basandi kitabullah. The implication can be seen in the way they request. This study aims at describing the factors of the markers of politeness in requesting in Minangkabau language. Linguistically, the politeness of request is reflected from (1) the length of the utterance, (2) the sequence of the act, and (3) the use of non-imperative sentence. Kinesics, however, also plays important role as the indicator of the politeness.
