Abstract

This study is an atempt to observe the request strategies used in Bahasa Indonesia( A Cross Cultural Study). There are three problems analysed, namely (1) the kinds of strategies used, (2) the sequence of the strategies, and (3) the factors influencing the choice of the strategy. The data are taken from the Indonesian conversation among the speakers-- from differently cultural backgrounds-- boarded in a boarding house in Yogyakarta. Having refered to the concept proposed by Blum-Kulka, it is found that there are 11 strategies used to request in bahasa Indonesia, (1) requesting, (2) questioning, (3) greeting, (4) giving information, (5) suggesting, (6) referring to O3, (7) offering, (8) quoting, (9) complaining, (10) using if conditional, and (11) satirizing. Each of these strategies is sometimes used isolatedly but mostly in sequence, namely (1) 2 in 1, (2) 3 in 1, and (3) 4 in 1. The choice of the strategy is influenced by the participants’ culture and the respect toward the hearers.
