Abstract
. Black rice is a local rice originating from East Pasaman which has too high of longevity and plant height, can also be improved through the genetic nature of plant breeding methods, one of which is through mutation breeding. The aim of this research is to improve the genetic West Sumatera landrace to get the early maturity mutant by mutation breeding. This research was conducted since maret 2012 until Maret 2014. Seeds of black rice cultivars was irradiated by gamma rays (60Co) at doses of 0, 100, 200, 300, 400 and 500 Gy respectively at the Center for Application of Isotop and Radiation (CAIR) – Batan, Pasar Jumat, Jakarta. In 2012, was conducted orientation dose screening to M1 population for determine of effective dose for genetic variability. It is very important to selection. In 2013, was selection for lines M2 for early maturity genetic. The result of this research showed that irradiation dose 200 Gy is the effective dose in causing highly genetic variability for harvest time and plant hight characters. In selection to early maturity genetic in M2 obtained 81 candidates with mutation frequency as 0.08 %, and than dwarf and semi-dwarf obtained 32 mutants with mutation frequency as 0,03 %. They are the expectation mutant for future development.
