Abstract

Minangkabau has had long history of adornment patterns (pola hias). It has been developed since pre-historic time. At this time, some Minangkabau traditional adornment patterns has become the beginning of adornment patterns for the future. In its development, adornment pattern has grown rapidly which is also strongly influenced by the elements of Islam Minangkabau is well-known by the philosophy, of “Adat basandi syaraksyarak basandi Kitabullah”. The elements of adat is based on the concept and philosophy of Islam, including arts, especially Minangkabau adornment patterns. In adornment patterns based on the concept of Islam, the potret of nature naturalistically is avoided. Usually, islamic arts contains the abstract patterns In some previous researches, it was identified that there were hundreds of traditional adornments which is specifically regarded as Minangkabau adornment patterns. How ever, in the last research, there is tendency that the exisiting adornment patterns cannot accommodate the patterns empirically as found in the society. Among them, it is found that some of them do not follow the philosophy of adat. There are some patterns which shows the creatures (makhluk hidup) which is actually taboo in Islam. This writing tries to identify adornment patterns (which is not identified yet) and adornment patterns which do not follow the philosophy of Minangkabau adat and to find the reason why those adornment patterns escape from philosophy of adat.
