Abstract
A land evaluation model for oil palm cultivation in volcanic soils of West Pasaman Region in West Sumatera was developed for evaluating climatic suitability and estimation of radiation, climatic and land production potential. Three methods were compared to estimate crop evapotranspiration and results showed that the method of Dorenbos and Pruitt (1977) provided a better estimation of crop evapotranspiration and crop-water requirement for oil palm. The results showed that the used of climate in land evaluation system for oil palm cultivation would enable a more accurate interpretation of the results for land evaluation. Based on land production potential, soils of volcanic origin in West Pasaman have high production potential for oil palm. Key words: land evaluation model, oil palm, volcanic soils
