Abstract

An experiment was conducted at Tabing Padang West Sumatra and at the Seed Technology Laboratory Faculty of Agriculture, Andalas University during the period of May to September 2002 to determine the effects of leaf position on the stem on seed filling and seed quality of corn (Zea mays L). The experiment was arranged in Completely Randomized Design with five treatments and three observations. The corn leaves were defoliated about 75% after pollination. The other 25% of leaves were not defoliated at different position on the stem as the treatments, that is, 25% of the upper most leaves, 25% of leaves at and above the ear, 25% of leaves below the ear, 25% of the lower most leaves, and six plants were not defoliated as a control. The result showed that the 25% of leaves at and above the ear play an important role in seed filling. The final seed weight of this treatment is not significantly difference to the final seed weight of the plant without defoliation. Viability of seeds from these two treatments are also not significantly difference. In contrast, each position of leaves which were not defoliated was not enough to support growing seed to attain high vigor. Vigor of seeds from all treatments were significantly lower compared to control. Key words : Zea mays L., defoliation, seed filling, viabili-ty, vigor.
