Abstract

Puddling is the most common method of land preparation for wetland rice (Oryza sativa L.) in South and Southeast Asia. While this method has certain advantage, it is time, energy, and capital-intensive. In the other hand, No-till (NT) and minimum-till systems can produce rice grain yields similar to those produced with conventional tillage (CT; puddling). Field experiments were sequentially con-ducted at farmer's field of Kerjaloman, Talangpadang, Lampung since dry season (DS) 1996 to wet season (WS) 2000/2001 (ten cropping seasons), to evaluate the comparative advantage of NT vs. CT on growth and yield, and economic analysis of benefit (B) to cost (C) (B:C ratios). Results indicated that the means of both growth and yield components of paddy from NT were higher than CT. Labor consumption under NT was generally lower than CT. Therefore, economic analysis revealed that B:C ratios of NT was higher than CT with net income of Rp. 1,016,250. to Rp. 5,070,350. and Rp. 1,467,000.- to Rp. 5,954,750. respectively. Key words: Lowland rice, No-tillage
