Abstract

Kerinci Seblat National Park is one of the largest park in Sumatra with about 1.484.650 hectares large. The objective of the research is to estimate the pressure of the community economical activities on the sustainability of this park and to identify the factors that cause the activities to exist. The study was undertaken in the villages along the northwestern bufferzone of the park, especially Kabupaten Solok, Pesisir Selatan, and Sawahlunto Sijunjung, West Sumatra. The pressure was observed in terms of cultivated land enlargement, plant exploitation, and animal exploitation, as well as factors that cause the activities. The result shows that the pressure is very significant with average land utilization within the park is 2.31 hectares/ household/year, wood exploitation 57.13 ton/man/year, and animal exploitation about 234.8 fish/man/year. The pressure is increasing for some area and decreasing for some others. Factors that cause the activities are the current income, education, land ownership, and perseption on conservation.
