Abstract

The experiment was conducted to evaluate the P uptake and development of mangosteen (Garcinia Mangostana L.) seedling to shading, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi inoculation, and phosphate fertilizer application from April until September 2001 in the experimental field of Andalas University Padang with an elevation of about 250 m above sea level. The pot experiment was to evaluate three levels of shading (25, 50, and 75 percent), three arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi species (Glomus etunicatum and Glomus manihotis, and control) and four dosages of phosphate fertilizer (0, 150, 300, and 450 mg pot-1 month-1). The experimental design were Randomized Blocks Design in factorial pattern with three replications. The results of the experiments showed that (1) there were no interaction effects between AMF, phosphate fertilizer, and shading on the the uptake of P and total dry weight of 5 months mangosteen seedling, (2) the development of leaf area ratio, net assimilation rate, and relative growth rate were the same between seedling treated with 50 and 75 percent shading, but were higher than with 25 percent shading at any level of AMF inoculation and phosphorous fertilizer application, (3) Shading affected total dry weight of 5 months mangosteen seedling. Shading of 50 and 75 percent showed better results than 25 percent. Key words: phosphate, mangosteen, mycorrhizal fungi
