Abstract

Nutritional support is a part of therapy which has an important role in the recovery of patient. However, high prevalence of malnutrition is still one major problem amongst hospitalized patients. An analytic cross sectional study has been carried out on May to July 2005 to investigate the alteration of the patient’s Body Mass Index ( BMI) and body weight during two weeks treatment in the hospital and their relationship with the calorie intake of the patients.. Patient’s BMI and body weight were assessed two times, on their first coming to the hospital and after two weeks in hospital. The result of 30 patients showed that 56,67% of them were undernourished, 40% were normal, 3,33% were overweight on their first admission to the hospital. After two weeks treatment, Body Mass Index was significantly reduced from 19,07±3,84 menjadi 18,75± 3,64 (P=0,013). There was a significant difference between body weight on the first coming and after two weeks of treatment. As much as 73,33% of patients received less calorie intake than their requirement. It is suggested that each patient should be given an adequate calorie intake according to their nutritional requirement. Keyword: nutritional status, malnutrition, calorie intake, hospital
