Abstract

According to the government, the Mentawai ethnic group is classifted ds an isolated comnunrty needing "pembinaan" through introducing 'modern way of tife'. Many development programs of various government institutions have been carried out to unveil ifs isolation. tn this article the teori ter analyses the success of tht s program in improving the Mentawainian well being. this article does not only intend to cri ti ci ze the government intervention but also provides approaches that enpower the Mentawai comunity based on ras IocaI potential and believe both tts environment and culture.
