Abstract

Socialization about using biological agents to the organic vegetables farmers was conducted in Aie Angek, Panyalaian, and Guguak Kecamatan X Koto Kabupaten Tanah Datar. It was done from July until August 2008. It involved two organic farmer groups and several agricultural staffs. The programs were aimed at increasing farmers’ knowledge and practices in using biological agents like parasitoid and Pseudomonas fluorescen (Pf) to control the pests of cruciferae and also to increase their knowlege about organic farming. The activity was done through extension, introducing the farmers to biological agents found in their cruciferae plants, and at last they were given exercise how to measure the efectiveness of parasitoids in controlling pests in demonstration plot to be practiced in their own group’s lands. They were also taught how to prepare Pf and use it. The activies showed that farmers’ knowledge improved proven by the questioners given before and after the activities. By increasing their knowledge we expect they can increase their motivation to continue growing organic vegetables in order to decrease the dangerous use of synthetic pesticides to increase the consumers and environtmental health. By involving the agricultural staffs and extension workers we expect they can disseminate the information to the farmers under their supervisor.
