Abstract

An experiment to identify active substances of rhizome of alang-alang (Imperata cylindrica (L.) Beauv) was conducted at the laboratory of Dept. of Agronomy Faculty of griculture and laboratory of Dept. of Pharmacy Faculty of Science and Mathematics Andalas University during the period of June to August 1996. Rhizome of alang-alang was extracted and fractionated using the procedure developed by Yama-moto. Basic, acidic and neutral fractions obtained from the extract, then analysed to identify alkaloid, flavonoid, phenoUphenolic, triterpenoid/steroid, and saponin contents. Result indicated that phenol was the only substance which can be detected from all three fractions.
