Abstract

High population density in Padang has resulted in large amount of municipal waste every day. This material will bring about serious problem if it is not well controlled. Waste accumulation in Kuranji landfill could cause smell pollution and diseases for the people around it. Composting municipal waste using Stardec and EM4 activator seems to be a better solution for pemulung and farmers around the landfill area. By producing compost, environmental pollution could be overcome and organic ferilizer could be produced. Compost of domestic waste resulted from on farm demonstration by extension team from Andalas University together with the farmers and pemulung was applied to soil for cucumber growth in Kuranji. The result showed that, cucumber production increased from 9,27 ton ha-1 to 12,32 and 12,15 ton ha-1 respectively when composting domestic waste using Stardec and EM4 were applied.
