Abstract

An experiment to investigate the allelopathic potential of rhizome of alang-alang (Imperqta cylindrica(L.) Beauv) on germination of Mimosa pudica weed was conducted at the laboratory of Dept. of Agro-nomy Faculty of Agriculture Andalas University during the period of January to March 1997 . Three frac-tions of alang-alang extract i.e. basic, acidic, and neutral as treatments were applied to 50 seeds of Mi-mosa. pudica placed in petridishes at concentration of I Vo.Treatments were arranged in Complete Ran-domized Design with three replications. Germination percentage, index value and first count test were observed for ten days. Data were analysed statistically using Anova and then Duncan's New Multiple Range Test at 5% level. Result indicated that phenolic substances in acidic fraction inhibited the germi-nation of Mimosa pudica while neutral fraction delay more germination than basic fraction.
