Abstract

The isolation of antimicrobial compound from non polar fraction of the soft coral Dendronephthya sp. has been carried out and yielded a white amorphous compound 1. the compound showed antibacterial activity against bacteria Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538 and pathogenic fungus Candida albicans ATCC 10231 and Trichophyton mentagraphytex ATCC 5431 by diffusion agar and dilution method. The Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) of this compound was 25 ppm against Staphylococcus aureus, Candida albicans, Trichophyton mentagraphytex respectively. Based on spectral data (infrared and ultraviolet) and chemical reaction, the compound 1 was identified as terpenoid.
