Abstract

The species composition of the epilithic algae in Sikayan Garingging River,just arround campus of Andalas Universirty was conducted on September 13 and October 14,1993, by using quadrad method at the five different stations along the river. 62 species of the epilithic algae were found, belong to four classes; Bacillariophyceae (51.6%) cyanophyceae (24.2%), Chlorophyceae (22.6%) and Euglenoplyceae (1.6%). The number of species and diversity index of the epilithic algae tend to decrease, whwrseas, its densiry tend to increase to the mouth of the river. In the upstream area of the river, the dominant species were Sqtonet4 archangelii, Aihnanthes knceohta, Cocconeis phcmtuh, Eunotia pectinalis' Gompionrma tetrastigrnatunT, Frustulia rbomboid.es, Neidiurn iri"dis and Surirelh sp.,and in the downstream area of the river, the dominant species 'vrere Phormi"dium ambiguum, Cladopbora fracta, Cymbella aentricosa arnd Synedra ulna.
