Abstract

An experiment to study the effect of mixture of phenolic substances on germination of four weed species of family Asteraceae was carried out at the Laboratory of Department of Agronomy Faculty of Agriculture Andalas University Padang during the period of May to August 1999. Treatments were concentration of mixture of six phenolic substances (coumaric acid, anisic acid, isoverulic acid, salisilic acid, vanilin,and salisil aldehide) i.e. 0, 200 ppm, 400 ppm, 800 ppm, 1200 ppm, and 1600 ppm. Treatments were arranged in Complete Randomized Design with three replications. Data were collected on germination percentage, and length of plumule and radicle; and final data were analyzed statistically. The experiment was divided into four sub-experiments and conrJucted at the same time. Sub-experiments were four weed species of famity Asteraceae i.e. Bidens pilosa, Emitia sonchifulia, Synedrella nudiflora, and Tridax procumbens. Result indicated that mixture of phenolic substances at the concentration of 1600 ppm suppressed the germination of Bidens pilosa, Emilia sonchifulia and Tridax procumbens, while it has no effect on Synedretta nudiflora. The phenolic substances also have the significant effect to suppress the growth of Bidens pilosa, Emilia sonchifulia, and Synedrella nudiflora, but there was no effect on Tridax procumbens.
