Abstract

An experiment to study the effect of mixture of phenolic substances on germination of three weed species of Family Euphorbiaceae was carried out at the Laboratory of Department of Agronorny Faculty of Agriculture Andalas University Padang during the period of May to August 1999. Treatments were conrentration of mixture of six phenolic substances (coumaric acid, anisic acid, isoverulic acid, salisilic acid, vanilin, and salisil aldehide) i.e. 0, 200 ppm, 400 ppm, 800 ppm, 1200 ppm ,and 1600 ppm' Treatments wore arranged in Complete Randomized Design with three replications. Data were collected on germination percentage, and length of plumule and radicle; and final data were anaiyzed statistically' The experiment was divided into three sub-experiments and conducted at the same time. Sub-experiments were three weed species of family Euphorbiaceae i.e. Croton hirtus, Euphorhia hirta, and Phyllanthus niruri. Result indicated that mixture of phenolic substances at the concentration of 1600 ppm inhibited the germination of Euphorbia hirta, and at the concentration of 200 ppm begin to interfere and inhibited at 1600 ppm of germination of Phyttanthus niruri. There was no germination on Croton hirtus due to innate dormancy of the seeds. The phenolic substances also tend to inhibite the growth of weed seed lings.
