Abstract
Until the mid of 1990s the international competition of palm oil was dominated by Malaysian palm oil. Indonesian palm oil has a low competitiveness compared with the Malaysian palm oil in the world market. The aim of this study was to analyze the competitiveness of Indonesian palm oil in the international market. The import substitution elasticity approach and market share were used to measure the competitiveness of Indonesian, Malaysian and the rest of the world palm oil in the West Europe market, USA, Japan, India, and Pakistan. The result of this study showed that in the global market the Indonesia. an palm oil market share was just leading in the West Europe market. In this market, the palm oil from Malaysia and the rest of the world have the ability to take over the market and replace the Indonesian position. The market in USA, India, and Pakistan, however, the palm oil market share was dominated by Malaysia. The palm oil from the exporting countries of the rest world was higher in Japan import market. Especially for the USA market based on the import substitution elasticity analysis, the Indonesian palm oil has a supplement character toward Malaysian palm oil.
