Abstract

Gambir has been found to be effective against Staphylococcus mutans which associated with the prevention of plaque formation (Kozai, 1995). This paper report formulation of catechin, a major compenent of gambir, as antiseptic gargled solution. Due to ctechine’s poor solubility and stability, two dry dosage forms were made : effervescent granules (F1) and instant powder with separated solved (F2). Evaluation of dosage forms showed that both dried formulas showed good powder properties. However, catechin in F1 turned brown in color which was associated with oxiation during granulation. There was a decrease in catechin concentration of F1 from (95.82±0.01%) to (90.76±0.90%) after 6 weeks of storage at room temperature. Reconsitution of F2 gave a golden yellow solution, the cathecin decrease from (95.30±0.40%) to (93.84±1.14%) under similar conditions. Keywords : Catechin, Gambir, Mouth antiseptic
