Abstract

An experiment was conducted at the seed Laboratory Sukarami Assessment Institute for Agricultural Techno- logy (SAIAT), from January to May 1996, to determine the roles of bounded water on viability, quality and storage period of soybean seeds. Two steps of experiment were sequently done. The first step was to detect sorption isotherm in order to detemine the levels of bounded wa- ter by seeds within storage period under 13 relative hu- midity regions (from 5.0 to 91%). The second step was seed storage under five water content regions (two levels on primary, one level on secondary and two levels on the tertiary bounded regions) and with two storage tempera- tures (5o C and room temperature) which were arranged in factorial randonrized complete block design with trvo replications. Results showed that water content signifi- cantly affected seed viability. The higher the water con- tent up to the secondary bounded water and the storage temperature, the faster the degradation of seed viability. At the water content from 5.39% to 10.75% (on primary and secondary bounded water region) and at 5o C or at room temperature of storage, the seed viability could be maintained for four months with the seed germination of more than 96%.
