Abstract

The responses of aquatic insects to environmental pressures can be used to determine tho quality of river. It is predicted that the illegal gold mining activities in Mandor, West Kalimantan have changed the aquatic insect community structure. Our research determined the quality of Mandor River based on the aquatic insect diversity index. The research has been conducted on April-October 2006. The method used was field observation and sampling stations were determined by the Purposive Random Sampling. The total densities of aquatic insects range from 2.47 to 417.29 ind/m2, the diversity of aquatic insects was low (0.1995) with low evenness (0.1183), and the dominance index was high (1.000). Based on the diversity index, it is concluded that the Mandor River have been polluted heavily. Key Words: diversity, aquatic insect, Mandor River
