Abstract

Selenium is an essential element that might cause a disease in its deficiency, however if present in high concentration might toxic to animals or human. An interesting feature of selenium is very small margin between needed and toxic concentration. Since the phgsiological and environmental concentration of selenium is very small, a sensitive method is needed for determination of selenium concentration. Therefore a simple hydride generation-atomic absorption spectroplatometric method has been designed. The aptimum condition of operations were burner height at position of 8.5, coil/reactor length of 75 cm, fuel flow rate of 3.7 L/min, reagent flow rate of 2.6 ml/min, reagent flow rate of 7.3 ml/min, carrier gas flow rate of 2 L/min, GLS volume of 7.065 mL, NaBH4 concentration of 4 % in 0.3 mol/L NaOH and HCI concentration of 2.5 moI/L. Relative standard deviation of the method at 2 mg/L selenium was 1.2 % at 6 replicates, and limit detection was 0.12 mg/L. Recovery of 10 mL of 10 mg/L selenium spiked to 40 mL of sea water was found 104.36 %.
