Abstract

It is known that Autoimmune Haemolytic Anemia (AIHA) is an anemic disease caused by haemolysis of the erythrocytes due to autoantibody. Many factors contribute towards Autoimmune Haemolytic Anemia for example autoimmune diseases and hypersensitivity. Twenty two cases of AIHA was discovered during January 1993 to December 1996 at the Blood Transfusion Unit of the Indonesian Red Cross in Padang. The disease was found in the blood samples of the patients who required, blood transfusion, by using direct and indirect Coomb's test. Three cases involved patients who previously never received blood transfusion, whereas the remaining 19 cases had received compatible blood transfusion. Each patients had received at Ieast three units of blood. 84% of the patients had recieved whole blood whiile 16% had recieved packed red cells. All 19 cases were acquired AIHA, It was initially tough that the patients suffered from AIHA due to stimulation of alloantibody (isoimmune antibody) as a result of repeated blood transfusion, In this case it is suggested that blood transfusion should be in the form, of required blood components. This will be prevent the formation of various antibodies in recipient.
