Abstract

A case study on local wisdoms of coastal zone resource use and conservation was conducted in Panglima Raja Village, Concong Subdistrict Indragiri Hilir Regency of Riau Province in 2006-2007. lt was found that the local wisdoms for resource use consist of (i) determining the proper time, weather, and season of fishing; (ii) making traditional fishing gear to catch and collect shell; (iii) decision of the cutting zone of mangrove. The local wisdoms for resource conservation are (i) ceremony to honor the sea (ii) commitment not to catch and kill the dolphin (iii) believe there are the secret zone (iv) commitment not to throw rubbish into the sea (v)commitment not to use of songko machine in collecting the shell (vi) guardian of the mangroves. The role of customary institutions has been decreasing, predicted even since long time ago, as the national government in the independent era is only forwarding the farmer system and ways of coastal zone resource use and conservation.
