Abstract

This article deals with a content analysis of Yusriwal's thesis on "Kieh Pasambahan" (a methaphoral traditional words for opening ritual) among the Minangkabau. The thesis's author used semiotic and aesthetic approaches to understand Kieh pasambahan. This article shows that Kieh pasambahan can be used as an important entry or starting empirical point for further anthropological research that focuses on study culture or system of local knowledge. The assumption used in this analysis is that language represents culture. By using this assumption, Kieh Pasambahan represents cultural values and ideas for establishing local knowledge and ideal type of the Minangkabau behavior.
