Abstract

This paper discusses the meaning and function of"selapanan bayi” through symbolic and functional approaches. The selapanan bayi is a ritual ceremony that aimed at introducing the baby to his or her neighbours and the pair group. It is also to show the parent's gratitude to the creator. Recently people rarely conduct this ceremony,if any. Symbolically its meaning has changed. It is not to persue the traditional values that based on individuals' attachments to their social environment, but individuals' prestige. This reflects the change in the belief and the way of life, of Javanese society, especially in neigbourhood relationship. Equilibrium considered as a measurement of actions no longer becomes self reference of the society. Accordingly, the selapanan bayi has lost its significance for it has no symbolic meaning ond function in terms of equilibrium.
