Abstract

"Mamak" in Minangkabau adat law society at the beginning has played an important role, this system is related with matrilineal clan. "Mamak" has responsibilities towards his matrilineal clan role is more significant than as father. Later on, as the effect of acculturation, assimilation, innovation and raising of new values, the role of mamak becomes declined. This research tries to find out changing the mamak roles in Minangkabau society, at least in research area of considering as representative of dynamics of adat society in West Sumatra particularly in Tanah Datar. This study concludes the mamak role gradually has been taken over by father or husband. The higher mobility of man will stimulate the new value where extended family will not so strong than before, and the nucleus family has been proved itself as part of social institution. Marantau or migration is also to stimulate new values in Minagkabau life, government role through law No. 5 year 1967 and govemment regulation No. 10 year 1961 on land registration are also supported the process of institutionalization an individualization of nucleus family value where father's role more dominant than mamak in this society.
