Abstract

The anthelmintic effect of melur fruit (Brucea javanica (L.) Merr.) was studied in vitro and in vivo. Water of the boiled fruit and extract of the fresh fruit were added into glucose saline solution. Then the worm,4 scaidia galli Schrank were treated in these solutions. While the polar fraction of the extract was given orallyto the Decalb Warren chickens which were suffering ascariasis. Twenty percent of the water of the boiled fruit in the media have the same effect as piperazine citrate 0,032 Vo against Ascaridia galli Schrank in vitro (D-Dunnet : 1,8; 0,05 > p > 0,01). The polar extracts of the fruit have an anthelmintic effect irt vitro, but the non polar extracts have no effect. Seventy five percent of the polar fractior. of extracts (residual fraction) have the same effects as the solution of 0,4 % piperazine citrate in decreasing the number of worm's eggs in the feces of chicken which were suffering ascariasis, if these solutions were administered orally 5 ml/day. The study suggests that the fruit of melur could be used as an anthelmintic agent againts ascariasis.
