Abstract

There has been limited report on the phylochemical content of cassia vera bark extract, and its potency as anti-hypercholesterolemic in nbbit is not yet known. The objecfi'yes of this research was tr determine the phytochemical content and potency of anti-hypercholesterolemic of cassia vera bark extract using nbbit as ffie animal model. Ihe research was devided into three sfages, namely: (1) Prepaing cassra veta and its extnction with ethanol 96%; (2) Analyzing phytochemical contents of cassra vera bark extract; (3) ln vivo experiment, where tsuenty New Zealand White rcbbits age 5 month were used. Experimental rabbits werc divided into 5 grcups. The rabbits were fed with atherogenic cholestercl (0.1%) as positive contrcl, RBI| standard feed as negative control, or cassia ven extrccts (100 mglkglday or 200 mglkglday) or fenofibrat (15 mglday) togetherwith the atherogenic feed for 12 weeks. Levels of serum total cholesterol, tiglyceride, HDL-cholesterol and LDL-cholestercl were determined at week of 0, 4, 8, and 12. At the end of the experiment formation of fatty liver were obserued. The results of this rcsearch showed that the ethanol extract of cassia vera bark contains total phenol (62.25%), flavonoids, triterpenoid, saponin and alkaloid. On the other hand, cassia ven bark extnct was able to decrease total serum cholesterol frcm 443.3 mgldl to 139.1 mg/dl, LDL cholesterot from 286.5 mgldl to 95.8 mgldl and triglyceide from 122.2 mg{dl to 61.2 mg/dl. Meanwhile, it increased HDL serum cholesterol from 29.1 mgldl to 50.0 mgldl in rabbit serum. lt was a/so shown that the extract was able to decrease the everage fat globule on liver significanfly fram 27.47 globule fo 3.59 globule per field view. Cassia vera bark extract with phytochemical content was found to be potential as anti-hypercholesterolemic and also in preventing fatty liver in rabbit.
