Abstract

Salimpaung, a potential highland for horticulture crops, is Located at Tanah Datar District in west sumatra Province. Most of the population is engaged in agricultural sector. Before 1970s, potato was a main horticulture crop planted in this area and this crop has contributed as a major income for the farmers. Nowadays, farmers are not interested in growing potato, after virus infected this crop. Some study in Tanah Datar and Agam District found that low productivify in this area due to quality of the seed. Researches show that using high quality seed increased yield significantly. Having a good environmental situation for growing potato, Salimpaung has been projected to be a central of potato cultivation. West Sumatra Province Government and related institutions also put more attention in developing this area. The problem is the technique of cultivation potatoes. Having the advantages, farmers should be supported by introducing good quality and quantity potato seed to replace the local variety. In order to achieve the goal, a program has been conducted to train the farmers to propagate the good quality potato seed through bud grafting. This method would help farmers to produce adequate, cheap and disease-free seed. Afterward, farmers would be interested in growing potato over and again, and Salimpaung could be a central area of potato production, heretofore. The program carried out by class training and an experimental unit. Farmers are informed about potato cultivation, prospect and seed technology. The training was held at Mushalla with 20 participants come from several farmer's groups. After class training, farmers practiced the cultivation of potatoes in the experimental area. Prior to the class training, the potatoes has been planted for one experimental unit in order to show to farmers. Base on this program the farmers were very enthusiastic and interested to try this new method. Furthermore, this potato cultivation program could be proceed to a pilot project for potato cultivation, so farmers would see the benefit of using good quality seed got from the tissue culture. Thereafter, potato would be grown in salimpaung and this area could be the central of potato cultivation, as 30 years ago. Key word : Potatoes. Bud Grafting
