Abstract

The research focuses on the life of the laborer (buruh angkat) at Aua Kuniang market in Bukttinggi. It aims at discovering the social economic life of the laborer . The method applied in the research is an historical one. To deeepen the analysis, a Quantatif method is used as a supporting one. The aborers and lands are considered as the main information. The total numbers of the laborers is about 400. However, its should noted that the laborer work is considered as an extra job. During the week days, the only work for two days : wednesday and saturday. They get the extra income during those days. Based in the convention, the salary for the laborers is at the average of Rp. 750 to Rp. 1.000,- for one bag, but this in not always fixed. The detail of the work include 1. to collect and to fetch commodities from shops 2. to wrap up the commodities and 3. to lift them up to the local bus station. The amount of the salary is based on the mutual understanding between the laborers and the landstords. In general, the laborers are pard Rp. 5000,- to Rp. 7000,- Actually, there is no special patron-client relationship. However, the natural process of cooperation has built up a mutual trustworthyness.
