Abstract
Code mixing is the use more than one code in the course rf single communicative episode. It is observed in various levels of grammatical units such as morpheme, word, phrase and clause and sometimes in thel evel of sentence. The reason of using code mixing is different from one to another. They might be sophisticated knowledge of both languages, to be acutely aware of community norms, to show their familiarity or solidarity and as source of pride. It seems to be a tendency now in Indonesia to use English terms in various speech events. This is also true among lecturers in their lecture in their classroom at Andalas University, Padang. This research is aimed at to find out at the English forms used the grammatical level at which the mix mostly occurs. The data is collected recording the lecturs. A questionnaire is used fn find out the reasons of mixing codes. The result of the research shows that English is used at every grammatical level. The most frequent is in the level of word (31,3 %); the least is in the level of clause (6,3 %). Meanwhile the dominant reason of using English is due to the participant or addresses that are considered to have beer familiar to the English term used. In contrast, the reason of mixing code as to raising ilre speaker's social status takes the smallest amount.
