Abstract
The objective of this empirical research is to know the strategy adopted by manufacturing firms in Indonesia, to examine the relationship between strategy, business environment and firms performance as well as to compare between strategy and business environment of the high performing firms and low performing firms. Data for the study consist of 80 manufacturing firms listed in Jakarta Stock Exchange. Sample firms falls in some industries such as cement, textile, foot wear and foods and beverages. Primary data was collected by mailed questionnaires and personal interview, and secondary data was coming from firms and others institutions To prove the hyphoteses some statistical analysis such as samples test statistic, correlation analysis, analysis of variance are used. The study found that generic strategy adapted by the manufacturing firms in Indonesia were generally consistent with those of the generic strategi identified by Porter. This study also revealed the relationship between strategi, business environment and firms performance, moreover it was found that the high performing firms was using different strategi and facing different business environment compare with low performing firms. Implication, limitations of research and future research are also discussed.
