Abstract

A current view on autism states that autism was caused by mirror neuron dysfunction that prevent stimulant from outside environment to be percepted. This deficit has a role in hampering social interaction but also enable an individual for maximum concentration to his inner drive. For an individuals with high intellectual capacity this ability for maximum concentration enable them to reach high performance in their spesific interest. Mirror neuron dysfunction can be detected using profiles of EEG-mu-wave supression. Another states that autism were caused by hyperserotoninergic which can be detected by higher than normal urinary level of 5-HIAA and by metallothionein defisit which can be detected by higher than normal urinary level of porphyrine. These have resulted in a restrictive diet that decreases the intake of essensiel nutrient which will hamper growth and development in child. Based on these hypotheses, a question arises as follows: Do defisit in EEG-mu wave suppression is pathognomonic symptom in autism? Do urinary level of 5-HIAA and porphyrine are higher in autistic child than in normal child? Do urinary level of 5-HIAA and porphyrine are higher in emotionally explosive child than in emotionally unexplosive child? To answer this question a research was conducted in 15 autistic child with 15 normal child as control. Method: Autism were diagnosed using 3-Domain Autism Criterias. The level of emotional explosivity were determined using Intensity of Emotional Explosivity instrumen. The profile of EEG-mu wave suppression were determined using Computerized EEG. Urinary level of 5-HIAA were determined using Elisa Method and urinary level of porphyrine by chromatography. Result: Disturbance in suppression of EEG-mu wave were not detected in all normal child but detected in all of the 15 autistic childs .There are no significant differences in urinary 5-HIAA and porphyrine level between normal control and autistic childs. Although the differences are not statistically significant, the urinary levels of 5-HIAA and porphyrine are consistently higher in emotionally explosive autistic child than in emotionally unexplosive autistic child. Conclusion: Defisit in EEG-mu wave suppression seems pathognomonic for autism. It seems that examination of EEG-mu wave suppression can be used as an early detection method for autism. It seems that hiperserotonergic and metallothionein defisit are not related to autism, especially high functioning autism. A wider and through research is very important to reach a through understanding on autism.
