Abstract

Principle of state has been a problem since pre-freedom of Republic of Indonesia till this reform era. It can be seen from polemic between M. Natsir and Soekarno around 1930. Last, this continues as an ideological debate between group of Islam and nationalism in formal forum, it began from BPUPKI meeting until Annual Meeting of People’s Advisory Assembly (MPR) in 2000. This study aims to know the political idea of M. Natsir about Islam as a principle of state and its relation with the emergence of idea to return to Jakarta charter. Because the study of idea of principle of state is as a political decision that becomes staatfundamentalnorm, so approach of this study is through qualitative analysis in the form of deductive and comparative. Through this study, it is known that the political idea of M. Natsir is included into religious modernism idea category, because he thinks that: Islam and State as “integreerend deel” (affairs of state is a part of Islam itself). There is no political relation of the emergence of idea to return to Jakarta charter with the political idea of M. Natsir, but it only has emotional-ideological relation.
