Abstract
A large number of potential natural fibers found in Indonesia can be developed as a new useful material. One of the natural fibers comes of cyathea contaminans tree. Porpose of this research is to study the effect of NaOH solution on mechanical and physical properties of cyathea contaminans fibers. The fibers were immersed in NaOH solution for different time at room temperature. The treated fibers were rinsed with water in order to clean residual solution. Tensile fibers were tested by using the tensile testing equipment and diameter of fibers was measured using micrometer. Results of investigation showed that tensile strength of the fibers has increased significantly after being treated by NaOH solution; meanwhile diameter of treated fiber was decreased due to damage of fiber structure.
