Abstract

"Longyam" system is a semi intensive fish culture. In this system, chicken cages are set above the ponds and chicken feces produced fell down to the water. A research on the pond's water quality and the quality of fish (Pangasius hypopthalmus) that are reared in this pond has been conducted in January to April 2004. Results indicated hedensity of plankton present in the pond. The highest number of plankton (163.500 cell/l) was achieved in the 45 th day, in the pond with 40 chickens (A40). The presence of chicken manure may not affect the water temperature, but it positively affects of chemical parameters of the water. While in the study on the quality of fish, it is shown that: a) chicken manure positively increases the number of pathogen bacteria such as E.coli, Proteus, Salmonella and C.perfringens. b) The highest protein content (28.67%), fat content (15.58%) and the heaviest body weight were obtained in the fish with A40 treatment, in the 90 th day. c) chicken manure positively affect the fish weights. Base on the results, it can concluded that the "longyam"system with 40 chicken/pond provide the best result. Key word: Longyam fish culture, chicken manure, water quality, plankton, pathogen bacteria.
