Abstract
Background : Over the last century there has been a trend toward an earlier onset of menarche attributed to better nutrition and body fatness. NHANES III had been report that there were about 20 % obesity in chillhood and adolescent girl. With the discovery of the obesity gene (ob) and its product leptin, we reexamined relation between obesity and menarche age from a new perspective.
Goal : We want to know relation between serum leptin concentration, body mass index, fat body percentage and waist hip ratio with the age at menarche.
Subjects and Methods : Fourty four healthy girls was recruited from junior high school district in Padang city with age interval 11-14 years olds and post menarche ≤ 1 years ago to participate in Cross Sectional Study with correlation regression of analysis. Serum leptin concentration was measured using immunoassay method. Body fat percentage was calculated by using U.S. Navy Circumference Method.
Result : Statistical analysis by using t-test and correlation regression test (CI 95 %) was found significantly association and strongly correlation between serum leptin concentration with menarche age (p=0,000; r=0,98), body mass index with menarche age (p=0,000; r=0,98), body fat percentage with menarche age (p=0,000; r=0,97), WHR with menarche age (p=0,000; r=0,95) and body fat percentage with serum leptin concentration (p=0,000; r=0,98). An increase of 1 ng/ml serum leptin concentration lowered the age at menarche by 0.36 months or 11 days and an increase of 1 % body fat percentage lowered the age at menarche by 1.4 month.
Conclussion : There were significantly association and strongly correlation between serum leptin concentration, body mass index, body fat percentage and WHR with the age at menarche
