Abstract

Hypertension is a strong determinant factor for cardiovascular diseases. Some factors such as age, waist circumference and waist and hip ratio have relationship with blood pressure. A study has been done to determine relationship between blood pressure and some risk factors such as anthropometric indices (Body Mass Index, waist circumference, waist and hip ratio), smoking and food and nutrient consumption. This was a cross sectional study in four municipalities in West Sumatera. Total subject were 800. Multi stage random sampling and systematic random sampling were used in selecting the location and the subjects. To analyze relationship between blood pressure and the risk factors; chi-square, t-test and ANOVA were used. Level of significancy was P<0.05. Hypertension (systolic pressure >140 mmHg, diastolic pressure >90 mmHg) was found in 14.36% subjects. A strong relationship was found between systolic blood pressure with weight (P<0.003), waist circumference (P<0.000) and age (P<0.000). . A strong relationship was also found between diastolic blood pressure with waist circumference (P<0.000). Smoking was found in 30% subjects. No correlation was found between blood pressure and food/nutrient consumption.
