Abstract
AGRIBUSINESS DEVELOPMENT STRATEGY OF CASSAVA IN KENAGARIAN GADUT TILATANG KAMANG SUB-DISTRICT AGAM DISTRICT
ABSTRACT
The aims of the research are to describe agribusiness development strategy of cassava and to formulate the new strategy of cassava agribusiness in Kenagarian Gadut. The research was conducted from April to May 2012, and used SWOT and IFE-EFE matrix techniques to analize the data.
The research finds that, recently there are many agricultural stores available in the research area, so the farmers can buy fertilizers and herbicides easily. Although the agroclimate of Kenagarian Gadut is suitable for cassava, the cultivation technique applied by the farmers did not meet the recommendation, consequently the production of cassava is lower than optimum production. Furthermore, in the research area people have started processing cassava into keripik sanjai and have been marketed to Payakumbuh and Padang. In addition, Kenagarian Gadut has good transportation, communication, credit institution infrastructures that can be utilized for cassava agribusiness development.
The strategy that can be implemented for cassava agribusiness development in Kenagarian Gadut, are (1) using the recommended cassava cuttings, (2) improving fertilization of cassava, (3) reducing the utilization of herbicides, (4) establishing the group business for the farmers or the community in Nagari Gadut, (5) improving the packaging of keripik sanjai, (6) improving the quality of keripik sanjai, (7) diversifying flavor of keripik sanjai, (8) increasing the promotion of keripik sanjai, (9) establishing business partners, (10) increasing the skill of human resource and entrepreneurs of keripik sanjai, (11) providing the training of post-harvest and processing for farmers on the cassava of cassava, and (12) enhancing the role of financial institutions.
It is expected that stakeholders in Kenagarian Gadut can implement the strategies that have been formulated by the researcher. Beside that, attention and seriousness of the government are expected to provide guidance for the development of cassava agribusiness system in Kenagarian Gadut, specially in conducting technical assistance and extension of cultivation, processing, and marketing and improvement in supporting infrastructure facilities for farmers and entrepreneurs of keripik sanjai.
