Abstract

ABSTRACT An experiment on “Effect of various organic matters on the growth and yield of chilli plants (Capsicum annum L.)” has been carried out from July to December 2012 at the experimental station of Faculty of Agriculture, Andalas University, Padang at an altitude of 360 m above sea level. The experiment was aimed at determining the best organic matters to promote the growth and yield of chili. The experimental units were arranged in a completely randomised design (CRD) with five treatments and four replicates. Data were analysed according to analysis of variance and mean comparison of Duncan’s New Multiple Range Test (DNMRT) at 5% level. Treatment was various organic matters at 10 tons/ha as follows: chicken manure, cow manure, straw compost, compost of city organic waste, and no organic matters as a control group. Data collected including plant height, time to first flowering, the number of dichotomes per plant, time to first harvesting, total number of fruit per plant, fruit weight per plant, fruit yield per plot and per hectare, and number of fruit remains on plants at the end of experiment. Results indicated that chicken manure resulted in best growth of chilli plants as shown in highest plant height, total number of dichotomes, time to first harvesting, total number of fruits per plants, fruit weight per plant and yield per hectare. Key word : organic matters, growth, yield, chili plants
